RIVER CROSSING: I WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOU
October 2019 Update - The cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento are proud to announce that two names have been selected for an art project that renames two important spots along the Sacramento waterfront. The project by British artist Joshua Sofaer is called "River Crossing: I want to communicate with you" and asked residents in summer to nominate people they would like to have commemorated. Over 650 nominations were received and a panel of judges selected two names: Isabel S. Naranjo for the new name of a dock in Old Sacramento and Etenesh Zeleke for a dock to be built in West Sacramento. Along with the selected two names for the docks, a total of 33 nominees, their photos, and the submitted stories will be available on the project website: www.rivercrossing.name. As a final part to the art project, glowing lightboxes will spell the names of Naranjo and Zeleke in colorful maritime signals at their respective locations along the Sacramento river. The installation will occur in early 2020.
May 2019 Update - The City of Sacramento, City of West Sacramento, and British artist Joshua Sofaer are inviting people to participate in the creation of a unique public art project that involves the naming of two important spots along the Sacramento waterfront. The project -- called “River Crossing: I want to communicate with you” -- asks residents to nominate people they would like to have commemorated. A panel of judges will select two names: one will become the new name of a dock in Sacramento and the other of a dock to be built in West Sacramento. To nominate someone, individuals should visit the project’s website at www.rivercrossing.name or drop your nomination in collection boxes located at Sacramento City Hall and West Sacramento City Hall. Applicants will need to provide the name of the nominee and a brief written explanation of why the nominee should be chosen. The nomination period is from May 25 – July 10. Judges will select the names in August, and Sofaer will begin work on the light boxes in the Fall.
January 2019 Update - The selection panel for the River Crossing project has chosen UK based artist Joshua Sofaer’s proposal, “River Crossing: I Want to Communicate With You,” as the winning proposal. Joshua’s work focuses on social practices (see examples at www.joshuasofaer.com), and will be involving both Sacramento and West Sacramento communities for a naming project on both sides of the river. We anticipate the project to launch in late Spring. More details forthcoming!
October 2018 Update - Finalists Selected: The River Crossing Panel selected four finalists (Adam Frelin, Joshua Sofaer, Luna Studio, and Ball-Nogues Studio) to present their full proposals in December 2018. We anticipate announcing the winning proposal in January 2019 to be installed by September 2019. Please check our newsletter and website for updates and our announcement of the winning proposal. Thank you to all the incredible artist submissions we received. We look forward to announcing other temporary art opportunities in the coming year.
