Congressional Arts Awards

Congresswoman Matsui with 2017 Congressional Arts Award Winner

In the spring of every year, the United States House of Representatives hosts a Congressional Art Competition for high school visual artists. Members of Congress hold contests within their districts to choose winning pieces of art by high school students, and the winning entries from all districts are displayed in the Cannon Tunnel at the U.S. Capitol for a period of one year. The winning student from each district is invited to Washington, D.C. for an award ceremony.

Locally, Congresswoman Doris Matsui holds a competition for high school students representing California's 6th District. The Sacramento Office of Arts and Culture supports the Congressional Arts Awards by providing lodging in Washington D.C.  for the winning student artist and their family to attend the national award ceremony. The Commission also helps adjudicate the local competition.
