MISSION
Advancing community through arts and culture.
HISTORY
The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission was established in 1977 by a City Ordinance and a County Ordinance. The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission (Arts Commission) is a public agency devoted to supporting, promoting and advancing the arts in the region. Funded by the Sacramento City and County, the Arts Commission provides funding to local artists and arts groups; promotes the arts through marketing, outreach and education initiatives; provides resources to support and increase regional arts education activities; and serves as a community partner and resource.
The agency was guided by 11 Commissioners, five appointed by the Sacramento City Council, five appointed by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, and one appointed based on the recommendations of the existing Commission members.
ABOUT US
In a move that underscores the City of Sacramento’s ongoing support of its local creative community, the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission (SMAC) has been renamed the Office of Arts and Culture. The Office of Arts and Culture and its staff (formerly known as part of SMAC) is housed in the Convention and Cultural Services Department and is dedicated to supporting, promoting and advancing the arts throughout Sacramento. Renaming the office from the commission helps distinguish between the City’s administrative staff that run day-to-day operations from the public advisory committee. The office’s core programs include Arts Education, Grants and Cultural Programs, Art in Public Places, and is home to the new Office of Film and Media.
The public commission arm of SMAC was formerly operated jointly with Sacramento County, but will now operate solely under the City of Sacramento. The new Sacramento Arts, Culture and Creative Economy Commission will be made up of 11 community members appointed by the mayor and council and will provide advice and recommendations for promoting, encouraging and fostering the arts, innovation and tourism in the city.
